Principal Architect

Dean Dyson
Programa has been a real game changer for our studio. It enables us to both schedule with ease and have 24/7 access, particularly when on-site which has been a huge difference for us.

Dean Dyson

Can you describe the founding story of the studio and the core mission that drives your work?

I have always been drawn to architecture and the creative industry even before I really knew what the art truly was. I have been inspired & mentored by many great designers along the way but I always knew that I wanted to have my own design studio eventually. I wanted the opportunity to share my craft and to make a positive impact on others and the way they live.

We aim to inspire and challenge the vernacular through the designs our Studio creates. We want to use this power to positively influence the way someone feels, socialises, interacts, and engages on a daily basis. We always aim to approach a project in a unique way, considering broader subjects beyond materiality and space. Impacting people on a much deeper level that often themselves are not even aware of.

Can you share any specific examples where Programa has streamlined the specification process in your recent projects?

We spend hours researching new products and materials and when we now find a product that we love, Programa gives it a home. The software makes it so easy to find for use to again and again across different projects with the click of a button.

In what ways has Programa enhanced your client communications, and do you feel it has added value to your client relationships?

The client dashboard has allowed us to interact with clients directly with the click of a button rather than continuous issues back and forth to finally get approval. It lets us share our ideas quickly and get feedback / sign off with a much more streamlined approach.

How would you describe your studio’s culture and working environment?

Our studio thrives on a close-knit and collaborative culture, and we promote strong teamwork and synergy among our team members. We have intentionally cultivated an environment where everyone works closely together, which has proven to be the foundation of our success. This close interaction not only enhances communication and understanding but also encourages creativity. Everyone has a shared passion for architecture and design, and we take pride in nurturing an atmosphere that values everyone’s contributions while emphasising the collective strength of our team. This camaraderie and tight-knit working dynamic enable us to consistently deliver great results to our clients and create a fulfilling professional experience for our team.

Dean Dyson

How do you choose the projects you work on, and what are your criteria for selection?

We look for key criteria in our clients which include a deep appreciation for quality design, a willingness to invest in their vision, a desire to be guided by our expert team, and a shared set of values that aligns with our own focus on sustainability, functionality, and excellence.

For us it is not about the type of project specifically but more about what is the transformation and impact we can make for the client regardless of the size of the project.

What role does collaboration play within your studio, and how do you foster it?

We work in a very collaborative way. Everyone gets the opportunity to be involved in the design of each of our projects in some way and we value the perspective that each team member contributes to the work of the Studio. Alongside that, we want to empower our designers to feel confident in their decisions & allow them to have valuable input on each project we take on.

How would you articulate your design philosophy? What principles guide your creative process?

Collaborative conversation is so important! I find describing ideas is as important as sketching them. It is a direct extension of what you are thinking, imagining, and therefore describing. Where ideas can be shared with true originality and authenticity, free from review or refinement. Music is also a powerful tool I use when designing.

Can you discuss a specific method or technique that’s signature to your studio’s practice?

At Dean Dyson Architects we emphasise “Biophilic Integration” as a signature method that embodies our core principles of functionality, wellness, and sustainability. This approach draws inspiration from nature to create spaces that promote well-being and minimise environmental impact. We achieve this by seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces, prioritising natural ventilation, and lighting, and using sustainable materials. Our holistic approach ensures that our projects not only function efficiently but also contribute positively to the physical and mental health of occupants while reducing their environmental footprint. Biophilic Integration is at the heart of our studio’s commitment to creating spaces that thrive in harmony with nature.

How do you integrate sustainability or other ethical considerations into your work?

At the core of every project is the deeper consideration and approach to best utilise the natural environmental. Sustainability for us is grounded in the first principals of design. To create beautifully naturally lit homes to avoid the need for artificial lighting throughout the day. The use of the morning sun to naturally heat the home and get it ready for the day ahead. Carefully screening the afternoon sun to prevent the home from overheating into the night and creating an uncomfortable environement for the occupants. Using simple techniques such as cross ventilation to provide passive cooling. By using the natural environment to inform our design process we are able to create spaces that demand less energy throughout the day, are naturally lit, heated and cooled and offer greater comfort and enjoyment.

How do you balance creativity with functionality in your designs?

It is always a challenge to find a balance between creativity and functionality, but we try and embrace the constraints to come up with creative ways of being functional. By collaborating closely with our clients, we align these creative ideas with their practical needs. This holistic approach ensures our designs are visually engaging but also highly functional. The intention is to deliver and innovative design solution that enhances useability and well-being.

What role does technology play in your design process, and how do you stay abreast of new tools and techniques?

We are constantly on the look out for innovative technological ideas that we can incorporate into our projects. As a studio we are always educating ourselves and looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead and how technology can improve not only our design process but also the designs themselves.
